Here’s Susie !
Our new guest this week at Kelly’s K9s

A week of so after our ‘first date’ Susie was dropped off for her stay, which I was really looking forward too. Susie is a rescued dog from Hungary – initially a bit wary and nervous to start with, but she has settled in really well and now has her paws firmly under the table, on the sofa and in my bed!  Her gently and forgiving nature means she is a pleasure to be around.  She loves being stroked, lots of treats and walks – she is now proving to be a typical cheeky dog!

It has tho’ I admit, taken Susie a few days to ‘unpack her stuff’ and feel at home.  After her guardian’s left, she paced around, scratched at the front door, looking lost and worried.  She cowered away when I attempted to take off her harness; she curled up in a tight ball in her bed and understandably so, didn’t look at all at ease.

I gave her a bowl of water and a cow’s ear to chew on – which disappeared in a matter of seconds.  She ventured out of her bed and begun to sniff around the house and garden.  I left her to potter about and gave her plenty of space.  She ventured half way up the stairs, before sprinting back down.  I chatted to her to make her feel at ease.

After a while she came up to me and gently muzzled my hand.  She let me touch her briefly before walking off.  She did this several times before building up the courage and wiggled onto the sofa next to me.  I gently rubbed her chest, letting her know I was happy for her to be in our shared space.  I noticed she licked her lips a little and her ears went slightly back – she was having a ‘silent conversation’ telling me she felt a little nervous and worried, so I stopped.  A few moments later she gently pawed me, wanting some more fuss, which of course, I couldn’t refuse.

This was a little breakthrough moment for us both and from then on, things have only got better.
